Venerable Kotikawatte Gothami Bhikkhuni
The lay name of the Venerable Kotikawatte Gothami Bhikkhuni was Ramani. She was devout from an early age and lived a pious life. Her marriage did not interfere and she continued to meditate on the Dhamma even after marriage. After the death of her husband, she and 12 other nuns became bhikkunis under the guidance of Dr. Bhikku Kusuma . It later became known as Gothami in Kotikawatta. She had the spiritual power to heal. Many patients are cured of it. Even people from foreign countries came to Sri Lanka to cure her diseases.
Gothami and other bhikkhunis were looking for a suitable place for the mediation center. Inland from the town of Meegoda found a land in a quiet and beautiful environment. A group of devotees who had received blessings from Bhikkhuni Gothami had bought the land and offered it to this meditation center. Started in a small coconut grove, the center was visited by many people for meditation and healing. Dato ‘Frankichua, a Malaysian, was a wealthy man who rose to prominence in business with the blessings of the Bhikkhuni Gothami . With his generous donations, the place became a full-fledged meditation center. Fifty meditation rooms, single storey and two storey buildings, alms halls and Dharmashalas were constructed at this place.
Today, the Prajapathi Meditation Center is well-known locally and abroad as a place where the truth can be understood, the monks can be ordained, and both the clergy and the laity can meditate.
